SEO Consultant for Pet Food Brands

Pet food search splits in two. The shopping half (“best dog food”, “puppy food”, “fresh dog food”) is decided on collection and product pages, where the life stage, protein and format have to be in the title. The label half (how much to feed, what an AAFCO statement means, whether a recalled lot is yours) goes to whoever puts the bag's back panel on the page as text. I build both, make no health claims, and measure the work in orders and subscriptions.

If your guaranteed analysis and feeding chart exist only in a photo of the bag, Google has nothing to rank.

The Bag, Taken Apart

Every panel on a bag of dog food is a question an owner types into Google

What stands between the search and your website

Shopping results
Product cards with photo, price and store. They read your product feed, so bag size, price and stock must match the page.
Shopping ads
Paid product cards. Big retailers and subscription brands bid on “best dog food” and every life stage.
Review roundups
“Best dog food” lists from review sites and magazines. They hold the broad search, so brands win the narrower ones.
People Also Ask

Sound Familiar?

Signs this is what's holding you back

01

The label is a photo

Guaranteed analysis, ingredients and feeding chart shown only as bag images

The product page shows the back of the bag as a JPEG. Google can't read the protein figure, the ingredient order or the cups per day, so the page has almost no text to rank for the questions owners ask before they switch food.

02

Claims that outrun the label

Copy promising what a food does for a pet's health

Pet food labels are regulated, and wording that says a food treats, cures or prevents a condition draws a different level of scrutiny than the label itself. I write what the bag states: life stage, analysis, ingredients, the adequacy statement and feeding amounts.

03

Review sites own “best”

The broad search goes to roundups, not brands

“Best dog food” gets 67,000 searches a month in the US, and roundup sites hold most of page one. A brand wins the narrower searches underneath it (puppy, senior, small breed, salmon, limited ingredient) with a page built for each.

04

Silence during a recall

No safety page when the news breaks

When a recall hits the news, owners search the brand name with “recall” and check the bag. If the brand has no lot lookup or safety page, news stories and forums answer instead, whether or not the brand is affected.

The Plan

What I'd do for your pet food business

Six moves, in the order they usually pay back. Each one is a service with its own page if you want the detail.

01E-commerce & Shopify SEO

Build collections by life stage, format and protein

Puppy, adult and senior; dry, fresh, raw and freeze-dried; salmon, chicken and lamb. Each earns a collection where search justifies one, with bag size as a variant rather than a new URL.

Map my pet food collections
02On-Page SEO

Put the back of the bag on the page

Guaranteed analysis and calorie content as an HTML table, the full ingredient list, the AAFCO adequacy statement and the feeding chart written as text, with no health claims added on top.

Review my product pages
03Content & Copywriting

Answer the feeding and label questions, then route

“How much should I feed my dog” and “puppy feeding chart” draw thousands of searches a month. Each guide links to the recipe's own chart and to the autoship option.

Plan my feeding guides
04Technical SEO

Fold bag sizes and flavours into variants

A 4 lb, 12 lb and 24 lb bag of one recipe belong on one URL, so reviews, links and the product feed build on a single page instead of three.

Find my duplicate products
05Topical Maps

Map the catalogue as species × life stage × protein

Dog and cat, puppy to senior, each protein and format mapped as attributes, so every guide has a collection to send the reader to and no two pages chase the same search.

Map my pet food site
06Local SEO

Show owners where the food is stocked

“Dog food near me” gets 13,000 searches a month. A stockist locator with a page per retailer region, plus a map listing for a bakery or shop, catches owners who buy in person.

The pages your pet food site should own

Dog treats is one of the ecommerce niches I've worked in. This is the structure I'd plan for a brand selling food and treats online and through retailers: every guide links to the recipe it mentions, and every product links to its feeding chart and safety page.

How I'd Start

How I'd start on your pet food site

I don't have a published case in this industry yet, so here is the plan rather than borrowed results.

  1. Days 1–30

Audit the store, the label data and the claims

I crawl the store, list the searches each collection and product ranks for, check whether the analysis, ingredients and feeding chart exist as text, and flag any health claim in copy, reviews or image text.

  2. Days 31–60

    Rebuild collections and product pages

Collections by life stage, format and protein, bag sizes as variants, and product pages that carry the full back panel: analysis, calories, ingredients, adequacy statement and feeding chart.

  3. Days 61–90

Publish the feeding guides and the safety page

Feeding charts and label guides that link to each recipe, plus a lot-code lookup and safety page linked from every product and the footer, ready before any recall news.

  4. Day 90

Report orders and subscriptions, not visits

Organic orders, revenue and autoship sign-ups by collection and product, as far as your store and analytics record them. The next quarter's pages get chosen from that.

Work Across Trades?

If you do more than one thing

Trade Terms, Plain English

The words you'll hear, and what they mean

The trade and SEO terms that come up in pet food work, so a report never reads like a foreign language.

Guaranteed analysis
The label panel listing minimum crude protein and fat, and maximum crude fibre and moisture.
Nutritional adequacy statement
The AAFCO line saying which life stage a food is complete and balanced for, and how that was shown.
Life stage
Growth (puppy or kitten), adult maintenance, or all life stages. The adequacy statement names it.
As fed vs dry matter
Label figures include the water in the food. Dry matter removes it, so wet and dry foods compare fairly.
Autoship
A repeat order that ships on a set schedule, like every four weeks, until the owner changes it.
Lot code
The batch number printed on the bag. It is how an owner checks whether a recall covers their bag.

Questions

What people ask before starting

Can a pet food brand rank for “best dog food”?

Rarely on its own site, because review roundups hold that search. The realistic target is the narrower searches beneath it (puppy food, senior dog food, small breed, a named protein), where a well-built collection page competes directly.

Will you write health claims for our food?

No. I write what the label states: the life stage, the analysis, the ingredients, the adequacy statement and the feeding amounts. Claims that a food treats or prevents a condition are held to a different standard, and the pages don't need them to rank.

Most of our sales go through retailers. Does our own site matter?

Yes. Owners check the brand's site for the label, the feeding chart and where to buy before they pick a bag off the shelf. A stockist locator and complete product pages serve both the retailer sale and the direct one.

Do we need a safety page if we've never had a recall?

Yes. “Dog food recall” gets 9,800 searches a month in the US, and owners check any brand whose name appears near the news. A page with a lot-code lookup and your safety process answers them before a forum does.

Want more orders and autoship sign-ups from Google?

Send me your store, where else you sell (retailers, marketplaces, your own site) and the recipes you want to grow. I'll look at it myself and reply personally, usually within one business day.
