SEO Consultant for Technology Companies

Hardware buyers search like engineers. They type a model number, a spec, “X vs Y” or “does it work with”, and they open the datasheet before the product page. Those searches are won by pages most device makers leave as PDFs or forum threads: spec tables, compatibility lists, firmware notes and setup guides. I build that layer for companies that sell devices, components, dev tools and AI products on their specs, and measure it in sales and qualified enquiries.

If buyers find your model number on a reseller or a forum before your own site, the spec and compatibility pages are missing or locked in PDFs.

Signs this is what's holding you back

01

Specs locked in PDFs

The datasheet exists, but Google ranks it poorly

The full spec lives in a datasheet PDF and the product page shows six bullet points. A buyer searching the model number plus “specs” lands on a reseller that copied your table into a plain web page.

02

Resellers own your model number

Your product name, someone else's page

Retailers, marketplaces and review sites publish your model number with more text than you do. Without a model page that states the complete spec, compatibility and price, the maker loses the search for its own product.

03

Compatibility answered on forums

“Does it work with…” goes to a community thread

Which drives, which memory, which docks, which OS version. When the maker doesn't publish a readable compatibility list, forum threads answer it, often with out-of-date advice, and returns follow.

04

Support pages Google can't reach

Firmware notes, manuals and advisories behind a login or a search box

Release notes, security advisories and manuals sit in a download centre crawlers never reach. The owner searching for an update finds a forum instead, and the next buyer reads that thread too.

The Plan

What I'd do for your technology business

Six moves, in the order they usually pay back. Each one is a service with its own page if you want the detail.

01On-Page SEO

Build one model page per SKU

Model number in the title, the complete spec as an HTML table, what's in the box, and links to the compatibility list, datasheet and firmware for that exact model.

Fix my model pages
02Technical SEO

Turn PDFs into pages Google can read

Datasheets, manuals and compatibility lists published as web pages with the PDF kept as a download, and the download centre opened to crawlers so support content gets indexed.

Audit my support site
03Content & Copywriting

Write fair comparison pages

Your model against the previous generation and against the rival buyers name, spec by spec, with a plain line on who each one suits and a link to both model pages.

Plan my comparison pages
04Topical Maps

Map the product line before writing

Category, model, component, compatibility and support pages each get a place, and the internal links run from how-to guides toward the model pages that sell.

Map my product line
05E-commerce & Shopify SEO

Match category pages to the search

“4 bay nas” and “2 bay nas” each get a category page with a short buyer's guide, and spec filters that help buyers without creating thousands of thin URLs.

Plan my category pages
06Off-Page SEO

Earn links from reviewers and integrators

Hardware reviewers, integration partners and component makers who already test your products, each qualified before outreach. No paid placements or bulk directory listings.

The pages your technology site should own

Worked through one real category, network storage, so the page names are concrete. The same shape fits any device line: guides route to category pages, category pages to model pages, and every model page links to its compatibility list, datasheet and firmware notes.

How I'd Start

How I'd start on your technology site

I don't have a published case in this industry yet, so here is the plan rather than borrowed results.

  1. Days 1–30

Audit the catalogue and the support site

I list every SKU, datasheet, manual and firmware note, and check which ones Google indexes as pages. On a CNC precision machining manufacturer's site the work opened the same way: category and product research before any page was planned.

  2. Days 31–60

    Build model and compatibility pages

One page per current model with the spec table in HTML, plus a compatibility list buyers can read and search. I start with the models that carry the most revenue and draw the most spec questions.

  3. Days 61–90

Open up firmware notes and docs

Release notes, advisories, manuals and setup guides moved out of the download centre into crawlable pages, each linking back to its model page and forward to the compatibility list.

  4. Day 90

    Report in sales and enquiries

Which model, comparison and support pages brought buyers who went on to order or send an enquiry. The next quarter's product lines get chosen from that, not from traffic alone.

Work Across Trades?

If you do more than one thing

Trade Terms, Plain English

The words you'll hear, and what they mean

The trade and SEO terms that come up in technology work, so a report never reads like a foreign language.

Datasheet
The spec document engineers download: dimensions, power, interfaces, limits. Often a PDF only.
HCL (hardware compatibility list)
The maker's list of drives, memory or cards tested to work with a device.
SKU
One sellable version of a product. Each current SKU usually deserves its own model page.
SoC (system on a chip)
The main processor with graphics and controllers on one chip. Buyers compare devices by it.
TDP (thermal design power)
The heat a chip is designed to shed, in watts. A rough guide to power draw and fan noise.
RMA
Return merchandise authorisation: the warranty return process. Owners search for it by brand name.

Questions

What people ask before starting

Should the datasheet be a PDF or a web page?

Both. Keep the PDF for engineers who download it, and publish the same spec as a web page with its own title. Google ranks the page far more reliably, and the buyer can check one number without opening a file.

Resellers outrank us for our own model numbers. Why?

They usually publish more on the page: the complete spec, questions, reviews and price. A model page that states the full spec, links to compatibility and support, and carries Product structured data gives Google a reason to rank the maker.

Is this the same as SEO for a SaaS company?

No. Subscription software sells on trials, pricing and alternatives, and has its own page on this site. Devices and components sell on specs, compatibility and support, so the pages that win are model pages, datasheets and firmware notes. If you sell both, the two sets need one shared map.

Should firmware notes and security advisories be public?

In most cases, yes. Owners search for updates and fixes, and buyers read support pages before they commit. An advisory Google can index means the answer people see comes from you, not from a forum thread.

Want buyers to find your specs on your own site?

Send me your site and the product line you most want to grow. I'll review it myself and reply personally, usually within one business day.
